Abstract
A statistical analysis was made on various type of arrhythmias found in 10,896 electrocardiographic tracings from 10,000 patients during a period of 14 years and 3 months from January 1960 to March 1974 at Ewha Womans University :Hospital and following were the results.
1) Normal sinus rhythm were found in 58.06 and arrhythmias were found in 41. 94% of 10, 000 subjects.
2) Total arrhythmias consisted of 57. 30% of sinus irregularities, 24.90% of .abnormal impulse formation and 17.84% of conduction disturbances.
3) Sinus irregularities consisted of 47.67% of sinus tachycardia, 27.10% of sinus bradycardia and 25.23% of sinus arrhythmia and showed a tendency to appear more frequently in younger age group. No significant etiological and sexual differences were found in their frequencies.
4) Abnormal impulse formation and conduction disturbances occupied 42.75% .of total arrhythmias and they appeared more frequently in male than in female in a ratio of about 5 : 4 and in older age group. In these two groups, the most frequent arrhythmias were premature beat(30.64%), bundle branch block (23.05%), A-V heart block (16.35%), atrial fibrillation (15.57%) respectively and these four arrhythmias represented 85.61% of these groups.
5) The incidences of arrhythmias arising from abnormal impulse formation and conduction disturbances were 39. 69¡Æo in cardiac group, 9.91 % in non-cardiac and S.45% in apparently healthy individuals indicating significantly higher frequen¡þcies in cardiac group, whereas that of sinus irregularities were 22. 26% in cardiac, 24.63% in non-cardiac and 24.96% in apparently healthy individuals showing no significant etiological differences.
6) The most frequent arrhythmias appearing in ischemic heart disease were premature beat, A-V heart block, atrial fibrillation and bundle branch block. Hypertensive heart diseases more often complicate with premature beat, bundle branch block, atrial fibrillation and A-V heart block. Atrial fibrillation, A-V heart block, premature beat and bundle branch block were the most frequent arrhythmias appearing in valvular heart disease. In the non-cardiac group, mere common arrhythmias were bundle branch block, premature beat, A-V heart block and wandering pace-maker. The more frequent arrhythmias appearing in apparently healthy individuals were bundle branch block, premature beat, A-V heart block and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.
